The transformation of historical areal decorative elements in contemporary design of furniture

Abstract

The subject of the dissertation thesis is the transformation of historical areal decorative elements in contemporary design of furniture. Its base constitutes of the research work in the area of historical furniture, which contains spatial decorative elements, and their consecutive transformation into creation of auctorial artifacts - furniture. The transformation in a sense of re-evaluation of original meaning and changes of concepts. This approach enables to work with various meanings contained in spatial decorative elements. Created furniture is not interesting because of its utilitarianism, but because of its content and interpretation into new form of design.

The practical work is based on a concept, where figurativeness of a sculpture inspired by historical element - caryatid is connected with psychological content of human being in a present-day world. Digital technology was used in the design process, and I concluded, that the initial material – wood needs to be switched to glass. The dissertation thesis is based on the transformation of the historical elements and concept changes, technological methods, and their insertion into new contexts and interpretations.
